04/16/2018 – Another Jail Escape Attempt?

This is getting beyond ridiculous.  Sheriff’s Office staff found a “disturbed” ceiling tile in the booking area and feel someone may have been trying to escape.  Aren’t there cameras in the jail?  Where is everyone?  How can inmates be walking out of the jail, cutting fencing wire, digging holes in the wall and climbing up to the ceiling to take down tiles with no one seeing them do it?

If you go by the jail you will see the street blocked off, only in the section immediately in front of the stairs, and multiple police vehicles.  You may or may not see officers armed with shotguns.  How many other jails in Texas do that?  I suspect none.  This is all for show.  No one has been caught trying to break into the jail under this administration.  All the problems have been from people trying to break out of the jail.

So when is Sheriff Salazar going to fix the problems on the inside of the jail?  Why were other sheriffs able to do such a drastically better job than this administration?  They had the same staffing issues yet they could manage to do the necessary monitoring of inmates and they didn’t need to make the jail look like the Guantanamo Bay detention camp to do it.  How much is all that extra manpower that is on the outside of the jail, costing the taxpayers of Bexar County?

Again, we at The Bexar County Jail website say this is a management issue.  If the jail is being run this poorly it means anyone in the jail could be in danger.  When you manage a jail poorly you have things happen like the riot in a South Carolina prison.  The Sheriff needs to get serious about addressing this issue before someone gets hurt.
