Federal Intelligence Uncovers Plot

White supremacists have been watched by the government for a long time but under Trump they have become more prolific and dangerous. While monitoring an encrypted app, federal investigators discovered the latest in the neo-Nazis’ attempts to sow fear and chaos on a much larger scale than what they did in Charlottesville, VA. Not only does terrorism generate fear and give the impression that the group is much more powerful than it is, but it also increases news coverage which can lead to like-minded people joining the group, thus increasing their numbers. Everyone wants a bigger army.

Bioterrorism

The current coronavirus that results in the COVID-19 disease is a perfect opportunity for white supremacists and it has the people who work in counterterrorism, worried. According to Yahoo News a February intelligence brief that was only supposed to be for official use,

“…noted the white supremacists “suggested targeting … law enforcement and minority communities, with some mention of public places in general.” According to the document, the extremists discussed a number of methods for coronavirus attacks, such spending time in public with perceived enemies, leaving “saliva on door handles” at local FBI offices, spitting on elevator buttons and spreading coronavirus germs in “nonwhite neighborhoods.””

Bioterrorism has always been something that interested extremists because of the shear amount of terror that can be generated when people face a threat they can’t see. Per Yahoo, the brief generated by the Federal Protective Service quotes white nationalists as saying that it is an, ‘OBLIGATION’ to spread it should any of them contract the virus.”

Everyone is at Risk

Officers are at risk. Minority individuals are at risk. Whether we realize it or not, some of these extremists will follow through with these plans. Officers know they are at risk when they physically deal with an individual. A sick person can spit in an officer’s face and pass an illness. But officers aren’t as aware of the dangers when no one is around. How many of us, officers and civilians alike, think that someone intentionally left body fluid on a surface with the hopes of infecting us? We don’t. We just don’t think that way. In truth, it takes a sick mind but we know there are sick-minded people out there and we need to be aware of what they want to do to the rest of us.

And yes, I do mean the rest of us. If you’ll notice, the methods to be used that are discussed by the white supremacists, will infect others that aren’t their main targets. They don’t care. Did you get that? THEY DON’T CARE. Women, children, the elderly, babies, Anglos, none of that matters to them. They just see them as casualties in their war. As I said above, the more terror they cause the more powerful they appear and the more news coverage they get.

Changing Information

COVID-19 is referred to a novel coronavirus. This means it’s a new version. We’ve never seen it before and people don’t have immunity to it since we haven’t previously encountered it. Because it’s new, information changes all the time as we learn more about it. The following information from ScienceDaily.com, posted on March 20, 2020, gives some guidance on how long they suspect the virus lasts on surfaces.

The study suggests that people may acquire the coronavirus through the air and after touching contaminated objects. Scientists discovered the virus is detectable for up to three hours in aerosols, up to four hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to two to three days on plastic and stainless steel.

The best protection we all have is to take the safety precautions for this disease seriously. Wipe down surfaces with disinfectant wipes before and after touching them, if you can. And always, WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY! Your safety, and the safety of those around you, depend on it.
