West Milton Police Officer Arrested

On February 8, West Milton police officer, Kevin C. Wright, was arrested on three counts of raping a child younger than 13 years old. The abuse occurred over slightly more than a two year period. The first incident occurred when Wright was employed with the Covington Police Department. The other two occurred while he was employed with the West Milton Police Department. The 32-year old Navy veteran was booked into the Miami County Jail. No bond was given.

Child Victims

The WHIO.com article gives very little information. We don’t know how Wright knows the child. Is the child a relative or someone he met while on duty, as we’ve seen happen before, especially with resource officers. We also don’t know how the police found out that Officer Wright was sexually abusing a minor. Did she make an outcry? Did someone else come across evidence? Is there any solid evidence? Regardless of how it came to the police’s attention, having a young victim is always difficult. No one wants to have to put a child on the stand to be questioned by prosecutors and defense attorneys but if there is no solid evidence, that’s pretty much what has to be done. Even a closed court doesn’t help the child much. It’s still traumatic.

Another problem is that children have a different perception of time. Remember how it was for you in school when it felt like it took forever for summer to come? You can tell by the way the dates are phrased in the complaint (see video below) that there was an issue in pinpointing the dates. It’s the job of the defense attorney to try to get the best outcome. Ideally, that’s an innocent verdict. When you have unsure areas, the defense attorney will try to exploit them. We can only hope there is some solid evidence to ensure that this man will be taken off the streets. See the video below for more details.
