For those who don’t remember, Laquan McDonald was the young man who was shot 16 times by Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke. Laquan McDonald was 17 years old when Van Dyke emptied his gun into him with most of the shots being fired after McDonald was already on the ground. Three officers, Thomas Gaffney, Joseph Walsh and David March were all acquitted of trying to cover up the crime even though they had written reports that had crucial discrepancies with the dashcam video. To read more about the officers who were acquitted click here for the HuffPost article.
To make matters worse for all of us who expect no one to be above the law, Officer Jason Van Dyke was sentenced to 6 years and 9 months in jail for the murder of Laquan McDonald. With good behavior he could be out of jail 3 1/2 years. 3 1/2 years for walking towards someone who is lying on the ground and continuing to shoot until he had emptied his gun. People get longer sentences for being caught with drugs.
Until the system holds officers to the same level responsibility as the rest of the public people will continue to distrust the system.
