On Thursday the 22nd, an accident was being handled in the vicinity of East Houston Street and Pop Gunn Drive.   Deja Watts and Nikita Palmer were approaching the area in their car but were unable to tell what the officer was trying to get them to do with the way he was swinging his flashlight.

As they approached him with their car to ask where he wanted them to go, the officer threw his flashlight at the car windshield, breaking it, and causing glass to spray onto the occupants of the car.  The officer then began verbally abusing the two women saying they were the thirds ones to do that, calling them idiots and morons and asking if they understood English.

You would think if people kept having to ask him what he wanted them to do, that it would be a sign to that officer that people were not understanding him.  Traffic officers seem to forget that they have been trained on what the different motions and whistles mean and that the general public has not been trained.  Other than the violence, I’ve seen a similar thing happen.  Some things are obvious.  Others are not, especially if the officer is making the motions in a sloppy way.

Regardless of how frustrated he was, there is absolutely no excuse for him to feel it was alright to resort to throwing his flashlight at the vehicle, outside of his life being in danger.  If this man’s temper is that short, he has no business in a position with the kind of authority and power that an officer has.  SAPD says the incident is being investigated but, no surprise, the officer’s name was not released.
