Police Want to Hide Allegations of Sexual Assault

While we are very pro-unions we are aware that unions can do things that are not in their best interest.  They can pursue actions that diminish their standing in the eyes of the average American.  That appears to be the case with the NYPD.  The NYPD seems to have a problem with sexual harassments and even assaults by police officers.  Rather than working with the agency to solve the problem, the police officers union is attempting to make sure the problems are handled internally so the public is not made aware of the issues.

This situation came about after the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) decided to start investigating sexual misconduct complaints.  They always had the authority but for some reason they would refer them back to the police department for internal review.  When the CCRB decided to start investigating sexual complaints also the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association filed suit.

The union is making the astounding claim that sexual misconduct by police officers is not an abuse of their authority.  A win by the union would mean the CCRB cannot investigate sexual misconduct since CCRB investigates abuse of authority claims.

Sexual harassment and abuse by police officers is a serious problem.  They are in a position of power which does not allow for valid consent by the person in custody.  It’s an abuse of power that needs to be recognized and prosecuted to the full extent of the law, every place that it occurs.
