04/05/2018 – Escape Hole Found in Bexar County Jail

The bad news just keeps coming.  A hole was discovered in the outer wall of the Bexar County Jail on Thursday, April 5th.  Inmates apparently were able to dig through the brick wall of the jail without anyone knowing.  It wasn’t discovered until they breached the outside wall where the hole was apparent to people walking around on the outside of the building.  The Sheriff has attempted to play the discovery of the hole as a huge success but you have to overlook many failures to get to that point.

The total chaos that appears to be happening under the Salazar administration is extremely concerning.  On the law enforcement side you have the killing of 6 year old Kameron Prescott.  The Detention side has dealt with deaths of inmates, arrests of officers and escapes.  Since this website is set up to help the family and friends of individuals who have been incarcerated we decided to focus on the Detention issues for now.  Why are there so many problems lately?  The most obvious place to start looking is at the person in charge.  The leader sets the tone.

Bobby Hogeland is the Assistant Chief Deputy over the Adult Detention Bureau.  We researched Mr. Hogeland online and found his LinkedIn page.  According to that Mr. Hogeland was a United States Deputy Marshal – Senior Inspector – Asset Forfeiture Financial Investigator with the Justice Department.  According to a KSAT 12 article Mr. Hogeland spent 31 years with the Justice Department as a U.S. Marshal before leaving to join Salazar’s team.

What this means is that Sheriff Javier Salazar put someone in charge of the jail who has absolutely no experience in dealing with a detention facility.  He dealt in asset forfeitures.  According to the DOJ website, the asset forfeiture unit “is responsible for obtaining the forfeiture of real property and personal property which were used in criminal activity or were purchased with the proceeds of criminal activity.”  He wouldn’t have gained an ounce of knowledge on how to run a detention facility from that job.  No wonder the jail is having so many issues.

What in the world was Salazar thinking when he put this man in charge of the jail?

UPDATE:  The creators of this website aren’t the only ones to comment on Assistant Chief Deputy Hogeland’s lack of experience.  Click here to read the KENS 5 article.
