Detention Chief Hogeland Resigns

In a surprising move Detention Chief Bobby Hogeland submitted his letter of resignation.  The resignation was submitted on Thursday the 27th and specified that it was effective as of Friday the 28th.  Chief Hogeland, who had absolutely no detention experience when hired, was plagued by problems at the jail.  Those problems were compounded by poor decisions on his part.

Chief Hogeland was, only the day before, the subject of a KENS 5 article regarding his excessive spending of Sheriff’s Office funds.  See our post.  The article came out on Wednesday and included a video of an interview with Chief Hogeland that did not go well for him.

We, at this publication, can only feel that the resignation is a good thing for the jail.  Sheriff Javier Salazar claimed to have known Bobby Hogeland for a long time.  Since Mr. Hogeland didn’t have any experience we can only assume that Sheriff Salazar gave the position to him based on their friendship.  That is a poor way to run an organization as large as the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

The jail has been suffering from a huge morale problem.  A problem that we don’t feel has anything to do with ratty chairs.  So far 20 officers have been arrested this year.  While officers being arrested will happen under any sheriff the sheer amount of arrests under this administration makes us wonder if at least some of the problems can be laid at the feet of inept administrators.

We applaud Sheriff Salazar’s desire to conduct a nation wide search for a replacement.  We hope he reconsiders any other friendship based appointments he may have made.
