Inmate Sneaks Meth Into Jail
Julian Dena was arrested on a warrant for Felon in Possession of a Firearm, this past Monday. During the booking process he tried to ingest a packet of methamphetamine. When a person is arrested, he is searched by the arresting officer usually before being placed in the patrol vehicle. When the person is taken to the jail, he is searched again by booking officers. Before the arresting officers leave, they search the back of their patrol vehicle to make sure the arrested person didn’t hide something in the car that they didn’t want to be caught with. If any illegal item is found, additional charges are added.
Dena was in the process of the second search, the one that is done by jail staff. The officer searching Dena saw that he was chewing something. The item was identified as methamphetamine. According to the KSAT article,
“Officials kept the inmate under medical observation when he ‘lost consciousness and became unresponsive.’
‘Facility medical staff immediately began performing life-saving measures until EMS personnel arrived and transported him to the Downtown Baptist Medical Center for further treatment.'”
34 year old Dena was in critical condition when he was taken to the hospital. He died on Thursday after his family had him taken off life support.
