Baltimore Police Officer Assaults Black Man
In so many of the videos that are out there where an officer is being abusive towards a member of the public the officer is white and the person on the receiving end is black. But that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. Minority officers can be aggressive to people of their own ethnicity or race. I think they do this to prove to the other officers, and maybe to themselves, that their loyalty lies with their brother officers.
The video below shows what I am talking about. In it a black officer (Arthur Williams) loses his cool and viciously attacks the black male (DaShawn McGreir) he is speaking to. His partner, another black officer, is obviously not sure what to do. He wants to support his partner but knows Williams has gone way over the line. He ends up doing very little either way. McGreir suffered a fractured jaw and injuries to his eye socket, nose and ribs. Towards the end of the video there appears to be blood on the sidewalk under McGreir’s head.
According to Rolling Stone, McGreir was taken away in handcuffs but no charges were filed and he was then taken to the hospital. Baltimore Police say they want the public to trust them but refused to release the name of the officer even after he resigned. His identity had to be discovered through social media. We’re not sure how the public is supposed to trust them when they keep protecting abusers.
Williams was placed under investigation and decided to resign from the Baltimore Police Department. A wise move but I hope criminal charges will be filed against him. His partner was placed on desk duty.
