A Bexar County deputy accidentally shot himself in the leg while he was at the Main Jail. The injury is not life-threatening. The name of the deputy has not been released.

02/28/2013 – Inmate Alvin Boyd County Dies

Inmate Alvin Boyd County died from an unknown medical condition on Thursday night. His cellmate called the unit officer to let him know of the problem. Medical staff was called and County was rushed to the hospital where he died. An autopsy will be performed.

02/23/2013 – Another Bexar County Deputy Shot

Deputy Manuel Herrera was shot twice by the driver of a stolen vehicle. The shooter, Jose Elias Mata, had wrecked the stolen vehicle. When he was exiting the vehicle he fired at Deputy Herrera, striking him twice, then fled the scene in the Deputy’s Tahoa leaving his injured girlfriend in the wrecked vehicle. Mata was spotted by two SAPD Gang officers. They pursued. Mata turned and aimed his gun at the officers who then fired at him, killing him.

02/05/2013 – Deputy Shot while Serving a Warrant

Warrant Officer Jose Esquivel was shot twice when he and four other officers searched a location for wanted felon Juan Daniel Gonzales. Gonzales was hiding in the laundry room of the house being searched. As Esquivel entered the room Gonzales fired at him using a handgun. Gonzales was taken into custody. Esquivel’s condition has not been reported at this time but it does not appear to be life-threatening.

02/02/2013 – Inmate Antonio Obregon Dies while in Custody

Saturday night inmate Antonio Obregon was found bleeding on the floor. Emergency personnel were called but were unable to resuscitate Obregon. The Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy but was not able to determine what caused Obregon’s death. Obregon was in jail on an aggravated robbery charge.

01/25/2013 – Deputy Arrested for Copper Theft

Deputy Mark McGee was arrested on a felony theft charge. He was caught by an SAPD officer when that officer heard sawing sounds coming from inside a vacant building. The SAPD officer found McGee sawing through pipes in an effort to steal the copper. McGee will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

01/11/2013 – Sheriff’s Employee Arrested in Prostitution Sting

Civilian employee Salvador Ortiz of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office was arrested in a prostitution sting that was conducted by a multi-agency task force including the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Ortiz was charged with soliciting prostitution.

01/03/2013 – Deputy Susana Cervantes Arrested for DWI

Deputy Susana Cervantes, currently on administrative leave due to a prior arrest, was arrested again on Thursday night for DWI. Cervantes crashed her car while intoxicated. She then resisted officers to the extent that they had to use a Taser on her twice. She also got additional charges of Assault on a Public Servant and retaliation.

11/06/2012 – Susan Pamerleau Wins the Election

Come January the Bexar County Jail will be getting a new sheriff. Republican Susan Pamerleau won the election. We gave our endorsement to Sheriff Ortiz because of Ms. Pamerleau’s complete lack of law enforcement knowledge but the decision has been made. We hope that Sheriff Pamerleau does an excellent job but we also hope she is, or becomes, aware of the needs and fears of the family and friends of incarcerated individuals.

Amadeo Ortiz for Sheriff

The administrators of this website discussed whether we should insert ourselves and this site into the Sheriff election. As a reminder, we are not connected with the Jail in anyway. The final decision was that who the sheriff is, particularly in this case, matters to the inmates and their family and friends. What we determined is that someone with law enforcement experience and who has already been the sheriff, is better qualified than someone who doesn’t have either one of those qualifications.

We doubt that our readers want their loved ones to be the guinea pigs that an inexperienced sheriff would need to learn on. The Sheriff has been endorsed by the Deputy Sheriffs Association of Bexar County, San Antonio Police Officers Association, Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas, San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association, the local chapter of the AFL-CIO and many others. We respect those organizations and think they are some of the most knowledgeable people to look to for a recommendation.

The members of this private website would like to humbly give our endorsement of Amadeo Ortiz for Sheriff in the 2012 elections. We would like to encourage all of our readers to vote for Sheriff Ortiz and to encourage your family and friends to vote for him also.

10/14/2012 – Sergeant with the Sheriff’s Office Kills Man

Sergeant Frank Bellino shot and killed a 19 year old man when that man attacked him. The unidentified male appeared to be drunk and was walking in the street. Sgt. Bellino approached the man who became violent, fought with Sgt. Bellino and attempted to push him into traffic. Sgt. Bellino shot the individual who later died at University Hospital.

08/20/2012 – Attacks Against the Jail Continue

Commissioners Court does not have the authority to privatize the jail. The Sheriff must agree to it. In a continued attempt to take the jail down Commissioners Court has not only attacked the medical insurance of the Sheriff’s Office’s employees but has refused to accept the conclusion of Jail Standards that stated the Jail was understaffed.

News today included the Sheriff asking for an independent agency to evaluate the jail because of their refusal to accept the determination. County Manager David Smith and Commissioners Court want to pick the agency. No doubt they want to try to find an agency that will say what they want it to say.

This website is not affiliated with the Bexar County Jail. We are a private site that works to help individuals navigate the confusing confinement system. After researching the topic we have decided that our stance is that jails run by government employees are safer for the inmates. A safer environment for inmates means more peace of mind for the family and friends of the person incarcerated.

Jail Standards has said the jail is understaffed. Commissioners Court and David Smith want to find someone who will give them an answer they like more regardless of its effects.

08/06/2012 – Deputy Accidentally Shot

An off-duty Bexar County Deputy accidentally shot himself in the finger. The officer was at his home celebrating his birthday with friends at the time of the shooting. The deputy had gone into his bedroom when the shot was heard. The incident is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. The name of the officer has not been released.

07/27/2012 – Two Police Dogs Die in SUV

Two police dogs, one of which was a narcotics dog, were accidentally left over night in their cages in the back of a sheriff’s SUV. Deputy Steve Benoy who had custody of the dogs, drove home, went inside to get his items for an over night trip and left, forgetting to put the dogs into their kennels. When he returned the next day he saw that the dogs were not in their kennel, checked the SUV and found the bodies of the dogs. Benoy is currently on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

Sheriff’s Office Updates Their Website

The Sheriff’s Office had one of the ugliest out-dated websites we had ever seen. We believe in keeping things simple but theirs was barely functional. That has sure changed. The website has been redone and we have to say it’s beautiful. The only thing we don’t care for is the picture of the Sheriff. He should be aligned in front of the flag better. The way it is now it looks like he has a little sombrero, cut out of white paper, stuck to the side of his head. It looks strange.
