03/12/2013 – Deputy Accidentally Shoots Himself

A Bexar County deputy accidentally shot himself in the leg while he was at the Main Jail.  The injury is not life-threatening.  The name of the deputy has not been released.

02/28/2013 – Inmate Alvin Boyd County Dies

Inmate Alvin Boyd County died from an unknown medical condition on Thursday night.  His cellmate called the unit officer to let him know of the problem.  Medical staff was called and County was rushed to the hospital where he died.  An autopsy will be performed.

02/05/2013 – Deputy Shot while Serving a Warrant

Warrant Officer Jose Esquivel was shot twice when he and four other officers searched a location for wanted felon Juan Daniel Gonzales.  Gonzales was hiding in the laundry room of the house being searched.  As Esquivel  entered the room Gonzales fired at him using a handgun.  Gonzales was taken into custody.  Esquivel’s condition has not [...]

02/02/2013 – Inmate Antonio Obregon Dies while in Custody

Saturday night inmate Antonio Obregon was found bleeding on the floor.  Emergency personnel were called but were unable to resuscitate Obregon.  The Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy but was not able to determine what caused Obregon’s death.  Obregon was in jail on an aggravated robbery charge.

01/25/2013 – Deputy Arrested for Copper Theft

Deputy Mark McGee was arrested on a felony theft charge.  He was caught by an SAPD officer when that officer heard sawing sounds coming from inside a vacant building.  The SAPD officer found McGee sawing through pipes in an effort to steal the copper.  McGee will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of [...]

01/11/2013 – Sheriff’s Employee Arrested in Prostitution Sting

Civilian employee Salvador Ortiz of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office was arrested in a prostitution sting that was conducted by a multi-agency task force including the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.  Ortiz was charged with soliciting prostitution.

01/03/2013 – Deputy Susana Cervantes Arrested for DWI

06/27/2012 – Inmate Robert Rodriguez Commits Suicide

Robert Rodriguez sharpened a plastic spoon and used it to stab himself.  He was found still alive but unconscious in his cell.  Despite being found alive, medical staff were not able to save him.  Rodriguez had been arrested on June 9th for drug and trespass charges.

04/23/2012 – Sheriff’s Car Catches on Fire

A Bexar County Law Enforcement Officer was able to get out of his vehicle without injury when the vehicle suddenly caught on fire.  The officer was driving downtown when he noticed smoke coming from the rear of his vehicle.  The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

04/22/2012 – Deputy Trenton Wade Arrested for DWI

A Bexar County Detention Deputy, Trenton Wade, was arrested for DWI.  Wade was driving the wrong way on 16o4.  He caused a Ranger Rover to roll over when it tried to avoid being hit head on.  Both drivers were alright.

01/27/2012 – Jail Passes Inspection

Jail Standards finished their inspection on Friday and gave Bexar County a passing score.  Congratulations to all the hard-working personnel.

01/15/2012 – Cockfighting Bust

Bexar County Deputies, aided by a DPS helicopter, broke up a cockfighting ring in Southwest Bexar County.  Money; birds, both dead and alive; equipment and cars were confiscated.  Several people ran away.  74 people were given citations.

01/13/2012 – Detention Officer Arrested

Detention Officer Corby Hood was arrested for being in possession of rock cocaine.  Hood was pulled over by SAPD for an expired registration sticker.  The SAPD officer noted suspicious behavior and frisked Hood.  A package of rock cocaine was recovered from Hood’s jacket pocket.  Hood has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Misdemeanor Monday

We have been hearing rumors that the Front Desk officers at the Bexar County Jail have gone back to allowing only legally married individuals to visit during the first five days.  We have not been able to confirm this yet.

11/20/2011 – Mistaken Release Re-Arrested

The Bexar County Jail mistakenly released Rene Palomo this weekend.  The mistake was discovered in the early hours of Saturday morning.  Deputies re-arrested Palomo and returned him to the jail.  Palomo had been sentenced by the judge to six years in prison.  The reason for the mistake has not been determined.

08/16/2011 – Deputy of the Year

Deputy Larry Contreras was awarded Deputy of the Year by the Sheriff’s Office.  Contreras has been with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office for 28 years.  The Sheriff recounted an incident that happened in May of last year.  While off-duty Contreras subdued a man firing a shotgun in a residential neighborhood.  Our congratulations to Deputy Contreras.

08/09/2011 – Emergency Dispatch System Down

On Tuesday the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system that handles the emergency dispatch calls for San Antonio Police Department, Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and San Antonio Fire Department went down for 3 hours.  Dispatchers for all three departments went to written down notes to pass information during the down time.

07/28/2011 – Inmate Suicide

On Tuesday Inmate Leroy Sanchez attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself.  Sanchez was found by an officer and was transported to Santa Rosa Hospital.  He died on Thursday.

07/26/2011 – Alfred Casas found Guilty

Ex-jail guard Alfred Casas was found guilty on two counts of bribery and one count of providing an implement of escape into a jail.  Casas smuggled in a small hacksaw blade inside of a taco.  He accepted two bottles of Xanix as payment.

07/20/2011 – Inmate Death

A young woman housed in the Bexar County Annex died on Wednesday.  The name of the individual and cause of death have not yet been released. 06/23/2011 – Attempted Suicide

Inmate Adrian Rodriguez, who was in the detoxification cell, attempted to hang himself on Thursday.  Mr. Rodriguez was taken to University Hospital.  He died on Saturday due to complications from the attempted hanging.  Mr. Rodriguez had already received a bond so his death is not considered an in-custody death.

06/05/2011 – Arrest made in Shooting of Deputy

Mark Anthony Gonzales was arrested today for the killing of Sgt. Kenneth Vann.  Detectives arrested Vann at his Pleasanton Road home this afternoon.  Gonzales will face a Capital Murder for the shooting.  Gonzales’ wife was also taken in for questioning but is not a suspect.

06/03/2011 – Sgt. Vann Laid to Rest

The funeral for Sgt. Kenneth Gary Vann was held today at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  Sgt. Vann’s funeral was attended by thousands. 05/31/2011 – Reward More than Doubles

The reward for information on the killing of Sgt. Kenneth Vann is now at $127,000.  The FBI added $50,000 towards that amount but the biggest single amount from an individual donor came from Attorney Wayne Wright.  Wayne Wright donated $25,000 towards the reward to help encourage anyone with information to step forward.  Thank you Attorney [...]

Deputy Juan Pruneda was arrested on a DWI charge.  An unknown disturbance between Pruneda and the bouncer at a bar on Main Street was reported to SAPD.  When City officers arrived Pruneda was already driving off.  Witnesses identified him to the SAPD officers who then pulled him over and arrested him for DWI.

04/21/2011 – Federal Prison for Ex-Deputy

Ex-Deputy Daniel Melgoza received a 27 month sentence for the beating of an inmate in 2004. Melgoza was charged with deprivation of rights under the color of law for the beating and obstruction of justice for filing a false report. He was found not guilty on two other charges.

04/12/2011 – Sheriff’s Office Donates to Japan Relief Fund

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office had a barbeque plate sale to raise money for the Japan Relief Fund. This fund raiser raised $2,500 that was donated to the Red Cross to help with the relief efforts after the disastrous earthquake followed by a tsunami that occurred last month.

No Refusal Fiesta

Ex-Deputy Quintero was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts stemming from two separate incidents involving excessive force on an inmate.  Quintero faces charges of deprivation of civil rights under the color of law, a federal offense.

02/17/2011 – Raul Hernandez Convicted on Bribery Charge

Ex-deputy Raul Hernandez was found guilty of bribery for taking cash in exchange for fixing a ticket. He never followed through with attempting to get the ticket dismissed but just the fact that he offered to do it in exchange for monetary enrichment is enough to be charged with bribery.

FBI Preparing to Investigate ex-Deputy

Deputy Nicole Bratcher is about to be investigated by the FBI for an incident that occurred in 2010. Bratcher, who was a member of the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) at the time, is accused of excessive use of force on the inmate she was escorting. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards inspected the Bexar County Jail beginning on Monday, January the 10th. The inspection was spread over a three day period. The jail received a certificate of compliance for this examination period.

Ex-deputy Daniel Melgoza’s federal trial begins today.  Melgoza is accused of beating and kicking two inmates back in 2004.  He is also accused of attempting to cover up his acts by writing a false report.  Other deputies have given statements to the FBI that support the claims of the inmates.

11/29/2010 – Inmate Commits Suicide

Mark Montoya, convicted for aggravated sexual assault of a child, committed suicide by hanging himself with a bed sheet.  The suicide happened not long after midnight on Monday.  Medical staff attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful.  He was pronounced dead at 1:35 am.

11/25/2010 – Two Ex-Deputies Indicted

Anthony A. Alvarado and Charles A. The Bexar County Jail has temporarily moved almost 100 inmates to the Zavala County Jail in Crystal City.  The inmates will be housed there for approximately six days while the units they were in get some necessary upgrades.  The inmates were from units in the Annex facility.

09/01/2010 – Escape

Enrique Castillo, who was in the process of being arrested at the Bexar County Courthouse, escaped from custody.  Deputies had gotten handcuffs onto him when he bolted and was able to lose them while running through downtown San Antonio.  Enrique’s mother convinced him to turn himself in ending an hour long manhunt.
